Hi---

but having a problem with base filler hole and how to Plug -seal this hole ?
morse taper --? cannot remove the cork or wooden plug---seems to JAM tight
IN base ----tried to cutthreads in Africanhardwood ---base 22 mm diam hole
failed----
IS there a easier method of creating a REMOVABLE filler plug --in a wooden salt shaker?
(maybe two sections that press together --?--no idea--
using dry seasoned mahogany/ leadwood
appreciate some ideas /tech approach ---

Thankyou ---ACACIA

I've made 9 of them for presents (4 pairs for family ) and a single one for work coleague. Basically I've turned big blank (70mm diam) cut to length, drilled required holes then turned the shape.
I've purposely left blank about 15mm longer than needed. So when I drilled holes I had one side left solid... Once hole was drilled ... I've mounted it back to lathe.. spur drive onto the solid timber end.. and 60deg live centre fits nicely into 22mm diam hole... Just make sure not to over tighten it as you will split the wood. no need for the wooden plug.. Then turned the finished shape. Making the blank slightly bigger than recommended ensured that the hole remained centered.
After I've shaped it.. I've fiished it off with AAA gloss and then simply measured and part the solid. Ends were hand sanded and hand polished with wax...

Apologies & thanks --Prle 77

I cannot understand your verbal description --
no idea what a "spur drive " is

you say " no plug ? "---

can you please show me fotos --or a sketch or diagram --s I am stumped

I turned a single 50 mm diam hardwood shaft --length 15 cm ---

do I bore a 22 mm hole right thru -then cut in half --to turn opposing sockets on each end ?

what diam hole is best for salt passage?

the plug / however --is my problem ---maybe bung some candle wax in base hole ?

a foto would solve this mystery ----
grateful for your help --

Acacia, can't tell you how to find them in your part of the world, but if you searched Craft Supplies, USA, Woodturners Catalogue, on page 93, about dead center of the page are what you might be asking about. Rubber Bungs at $1.10 each and part #104-405..... ........... Jerry (in Tucson)

Thanks --but photographs or sketches would clear up the mystery --
appreciate fotos of the method described --- or some exploded view of individual parts of the salt shaker

ie --as in auto manuals--even a roughsketch will be far better than a complicated verbal description=
(picture saves a thousand words)
grateful for any help here ---assumed it was straight forward --until the base plug fell out !

Most grateful Prle 77----
nice sketches ---so I clicked on your fotos --to enlarge the detail --
to my surprise----the entire screen darkens!! huh ?

must be the website cryptic message ---saying -"DO NOT ENLARGE IMAGES!??"

kept trying to enlarge your sketches& fotos --as I cannot read the fine words---
OK -- is the base hole a morse taper? for a standard wine bottle cork diameter?--
I cannot see how the plug fits into the base --to prevent salt dropping out with gravity?

Yet you said--" no plug required?"
your fotos of finished product ---does not show the base of the twin shakers--

Nice work ---very professional ---inspiring -
wil keep trying to enlarge image----perplexing forum ----!will ask a PC expert to enlarge images

,Most grateful -----ACACIA ( my bush DIY lathe --is rther primitive !---no live centre --just a 1/2 inch
pointed steel probe!

Hi guys, I think you might be at crossed ideas !
Acacia is asking about salt/pepper SHAKERS ,!
not salt/pepper GRINDERS..........
With the shakers you could just turn a wooden plug
with a taper, and just tap it in gently and pull it out
when filling!

Hi guys...I've just realised that as well./.. Acacia.. my apologies...I did indeed made grinder not the shaker.. so my sketch is not good for you project... But as a potential solution why don't you turn the bottom like this 403544
Use oversized piece of rubber which when inserted will go into that trench...
that way you dont need to worry about it falling out... ???

Acacia, above is a good drawing of what is needed to apply one of those bungs I posted about on post #4. A one inch hole with an undercut to keep it in place. If you were to go to CSUSA, the dimensions are there. With a little imagination, you should figure out how to get it done.....Jerry (in Tucson)

Many thanks ---just a simple salt shaker ---that's all

but the base dimensions ? ---the cork I used ---snaps off-jams in base hole

morse taper ith wood plug is worse -jams inside 22 mm hole ---

You say ---rubber?? how big ? diameter in mm would help or3D VIEW of a actual rubber bung
that can be REMOVED EASILY --without hacking the base to bits !

I have made xmas gifts for many ----super wood ----etc --
but angry housewife ----split salt over xMAS dinner---when my "plug " fell out
--plus hard to access the base plug!

must be anothermethod of sealing hole ---maybe glue a huge threaded brass nut intobase hole?

started off simple ----now its allscrapped!

ok ----made a shaker from Buffalo horn tip ----
same problem again ----base hollow---wont seal---

--

NOW the fotos I wanted t show you ----refuse to
upload---

ok ---never mind ---u get the problem -?
many thanks for the help----appreciate---

typing is a mission ---mustbe internet?
