There are heaps of large compasses with an ordinary pencil fitted, but they are not very good on burls or rough wood.

So I came up with these prototypes which will take a Carpenters pencil which are great for marking those large diameters.
The tubing is just drilled & fitted with a self tapping screw, but I suppose they could 404279404278404277have a nut tacked in place & fitted with a bolt.
They are about 300mm long & made to fit the only tubing I had.

Nice going on the compasses. I agree that using a regular pencil on rough uneven surface is going to cause the lead some grief.

I made something similar to your one that is pictured second from the left. I used masking tape to hold a regular pencil and could swap it out for either carpenter pencil or a bit of chalk.
