So I am new to the wood world and wood leathe. I picked up an old craftsmen 103.23070. I paid 25 buck for it. It came with a metal frame. Looking on info. On where go start and how to start. It also has an old motor on it. I clean the motor and it seems to run good

If it is like this one: http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/images/10946-A.jpg

That is a good start. Cast iron bed, head and tail stock.

Have a look here American Association of Woodturners (http://www.woodturner.org/) to find turners near you. A couple hours of instruction will save you weeks of trial and error, and buying the wrong stuff.

This is one of the best starter books: https://www.amazon.com/Woodturning-Foundation-Course-Keith-Rowley/dp/1784940631/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1485825761&sr=1-1&keywords=woodturning+books

Welcome to the addiction.

If you are near where there is a motor shop, take that motor with pulley to it and see if they have a used trade in with the same size shaft to fit the pulley. I would not buy a new motor, as used 1/3, 1/2, and 3/4 1725 RPM motors can be found cheap as dirt if you are patient. The 3450 RPM are more common but too fast for lathes without a countershaft and more pulleys. I have bought 3 good running motors at auction for a total of $15.

If you are mechanically and electrically handy a washing machine motor can provide forward and reverse and sometimes two speeds, cheap or free.

If you get acquainted with other turners, someone may have a motor you need under a bench because they got a more powerful motor. Once you get connected, all sorts of swapping, trading, buying and selling happens with wood, tools, grinders, etc.

Even with the smoking motor, assuming the lathe is working OK, you still made out like a bandit.

You might find one of these lathes used with a working motor, they come with many names and in many colors:

1/2 HP 4 Speed 40 Inch Wood Turning Lathe Machine 120v 14" x 40" - Lathes - Tools - Hardware (http://www.costway.com/goplus-1-2-hp-4-speed-40-inch-wood-turning-lathe-machine-120v-14-x-40.html?fee=33&fep=2588&utm_source=shopping.com&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping.com)

As a lathe they make a decent boat anchor. The tail stock breaks, the tool rest breaks, the bed flexes. If you can find one with a working motor very cheap, use the motor. I have two, one free, one $10, with working motors and pulleys.

Thank you for the info. I will see if I can find a motor shop. The lathe works good. When I first brought it home. The motor wouldn't turn on it own had to help it get started. And then I cleaned the motor and now it smokes like crazy
