Yes I know it's rare. But wanting to get my hands on some for pen blanks or bowl turning. If you don't have some but know where to get some I would be appreciative.

Hi Necromancer
Not hard to get hold of, contact Island Specialty Timbers in Tas (Island Specialty Timbers » Island Specialty Timbers (http://www.islandspecialtytimbers.com.au/shops/ist)). Chris Emmet is the manager and very helpful
Cheers Dave

Hi Necromancer
You will need to specify whether you are chasing dry or green timber as they have a range

Dry. Looking at bowls, pens, maybe some boxes in the future. The site linked appears to be for more than I can justify at this time.

Yes, just had a look at the site and it doesn't do itself justice. Used to have descriptions of the range of pieces for sale. My apologies I should have vetted it a little closer but don't be misled by the website, IST does stock smaller pieces and Chris Emmet will certainly help with phone orders. Maybe get a small turning blank posted across as a trial run before committing to a larger order. Better still take a trip to Tassie and pick up some pieces yourself. I visit family in Tassie every year or so and never miss the opportunity to go to their outlets

The pieces in the photo were bought from the Strahan (West coast) branch and from Geeveston (south of Hobart) in March of this year. Larger slab of Huon pine is 600mm x 300mm and cost $100, thinner piece is about 150mm wide and cost around $60, both have great Birds eye feature. The Black Heart Sassafras blocks cost around $10 each (300mm x 60mm) and the Huon Pine turning blank (150mmx75mm) cost me $16. Very reasonably priced for such a scarce timber.

Worst thing is I wasn't into turning early last year and I spent three days in Strachan!!!

As you are finding, birdseye huon is pretty rare.
If you bought a ton of huon you'd be lucky to get 10 kilos of birdseye in it.
Dave did well to get the 2 bits of it, especially the narrower bit for 60 bucks in the picture he posted. Must have been there at the right time.
Any bits I get I treat like gold, even hang on to the small off cuts.
Good luck with your search though, this forum is a good place to start.
Sometimes you do see birdseye pen blanks for sale on ebay.

I've got heaps of small birdseye slabs I've bought over the years stored in my laundry, I bought them for future boxes and pen blanks, but in the meantime keeps the laundry smelling nice.

Sorry, nothing big enough for bowl blanks, unless you like laminations.

Hi Necromancer.

Any luck tracking down some huon? If not I have plenty, including some awesome birdseye slabs, but they are not cheap. Let me know if I can help.

Cheers

James
