Awtex - but first a question

Hey all. I'm one of the lucky ones that only lived about 20 mins from where awtex is now being hosted. I popped passed today and am amazed (once again) at both the skill and genius of both design and execution on display.

As a few people had asked for photos, I took the camera along. Alas my useless brain and excitement taking over I left it in the car - out comes the trust phone camera (just for oldgreybeard).

Before I post any photos though, a thought occured. Would I be stepping in anyone's toes, rubbing folks the wrong way or being disrespectful to any artists by posting my shots? Or do awtex do their own photoshoots and the works can be viewed there?

I don't have the skill to turn any of these items, nor the photographic ability to truely do them justice. So do people feel my 'shots' could catch them in the wrong light and put the artist offside as it doesn't do their piece justice?

Just wanted to ask before I put anyone offside as that's the last thing I wish to do....

Gab,

By entering the competition entrants give AWTEX permission to use photos of the works entered.

But when in 2013 when I posted pictures from the exhibition, whilst the exhibition was running, I had received permission from the organizing committee's chairman as it promotes wood turning and the exhibition and a committee member helped with taking the photos.

So posting some photos should not be any problem as it promotes interest in the work of the competition but it may be of interest to note that in due course an official DVD of all the entries, professionally produced will be available for sale.

Hi gab, not sure I am one of the "artists", but I did put a few items in the exhibition , if you took a photo of my stuff and put it on the forum I think I would be very proud and excited to think someone would want to photograph my stuff !
Would the artists be upset? Why would they ?
Not too sure if there are rules about photographing the awtex exhibits !
But i for one would like to see what others have put in and who the winners where ! For us unfortunates that can, t make it to melbourne and also overseas forumites i think it would be interesting to see , the awtex website shows the winners but no photos , i do wonder why no photos ?
I would be interested in what others think .......
We normally have to wait about 6 months to get the cd of photos anyway and i am sure others show what they have made in coming days anyway !:roll:

I would have thought that if they did not want others to take photo's then they would have put up signs stating that or printed it on tickets. I would love to see some photo,s as it would be a very expensive trip for me to see the event.

Ok, thanks for all the positive responses - and given after a hundred views, there isn't one person that has mentioned anything negative about the idea, or anything I can find saying 'no photography please' So here goes!!

These aren't in any order or voted best by judges (though best in show is in there), they are just shots of pieces that appealed to me and my tastes. From this you'll gather that I really enjoy natural edges and beautiful timbers (as I'm sure we all do).
I'm not a massive fan of segmenting, though can appreciate the skill, time, effort and artistry in it.

Most pieces I tried to get the artist in so full credit goes their way, so hopefully no problems there.

Overall it was a great showcase of talent and who knows - one day I may gain the confidence and skill to enter something myself.

You have done good Gab, lovely set of photos. Amazing variety of timbers used in the exhibition, and the skill and artistry of the competitors is world class.

I believe forum member Powderpost has done very well for himself in the competition, and is accepting gifts of lemons which he will suck on in an attempt to get the smile off is face:D.

Not only did he do very well but he is also a very good demonstrator, I caught his demo on thread chasing on Friday afternoon.

The larger area with the change of venue allowed the works to be shown to better advantage. The major sponsors area was good as I bought an upgraded Tormek jig at a special show price, was shown how to do the piercing using a Dremel, scored a freebie of wood sample from Pop's shed and had a long chat with Brendan Stemp.

All in all an improvement on previous except for me it was a hour drive instead of 5 minutes. But I got a lift so no problems. :U

Gabe, thanks for posting the pictures. I was thinking there would be 5-6 pictures, but to my surprise, you posted a photo album. Thanks again. There is a lot of talent shown in those pieces. Good job, Australia.

Pictures 4 and 13 look like they are back to back. My interest is in the clock, picture 13. Did you by chance look at it enough to see what the thickness was? I ask because I've turned about 5-6 pieces like that from the edge cust of my logs. Does that make any sense? Pictures would be better, but this thread has plenty..... You should enter its about the big picture. As far as i am concerned the show was an improvement it has to move forward i think the committee did a great job i hope it gets bigger and better. Us turners can make that happen by entering the exhibition and helping where we can . Its a huge job to put on by the committee and i am sure if you were interested in helping in any way they would be grateful.

It was a good exhibition with plenty of excellent work, that makes it difficult for the judges. I was there every day answering questions to the point I was given a burgendy waistcoat to wear. That allowed me to pick up pieces so that anyone interested enough could have a good close look. It appears that there were a few forumites there to. Must say I am a bit dissapointed that nobody pulled me up. I restrict my visits to Melbourne to once a year, too many cars, people and it is too bludy cold..

I was there and watched most of your demo (I was the one that put my hand up when you asked if anyone had tried it) and was looking forward to have a chat with you afterwards.

But during the demo my daughter rang to say that she was got there, after her shopping, to take me home. So I had to leave in a hurry else I might have had to walk home. :oo:

Hi Smiife, I don't often to meet forumites face to face. If I had thought a bit before I went down, I could have has "Powderpost" on the name tag as well. No I didn't get to keep the waiste coat. :-)

I find both slang and choice of words used, even with people from different states (or even areas in the same state) quite fascinating. Couple that with accents (not on social media as it's text based) and it really opens up language to a whole new interpretation....
