I'm wanting to make a wide mouthed wooden jaw bench vise with 2 threaded wooden dowels & wooden nuts for tightening. Can anynody help me source these in Australia??
Chief Tiff 21st June 2017, 10:51 PM Well, I don't think anybody officially sells them commercially off the shelf. Carbatec sell the taps and die's to make 1" threads at only a cost of "rather expensive!"
If you have a router and a lathe you can make them yourself; Ian Wilkie (forum name IanW) has a couple of U-Tube videos showing his setup. He also wrote two articles in the Australian Wood Review last year around making wooden threads. The beauty of Ian's style of threading is that you can make any size and pitch you want; you're not limited to specific "standard" sizes. If you want a 15/16" with 7TPI you can make it...

Xanthorrhoeas 2nd July 2017, 12:17 PM Yes, Ian Wilkie's system looks to be excellent if you are a do-it-yourself person and can do woodturning (spindle turning).
If you need to buy ready made I have seen a couple of commercial suppliers of different kits in Australia in the past, but can't see them at the moment. Lee Valley sell a kit in Canada. European Ash is also good especially with Rosewood or Ebony nuts.

Its amazing what can be done with patience (of which Ive little) and skill (which Ian has in buckets!)
