My 20 year old Wertheim household vacuum that I've been using in the shed for the past 5 years has seized.

Is this a good price for new a 30L shop vac?

https://www.crazysales.com.au/online-30l-commercial-wet-dry-vacuum-cleaner-121897.html?aid=11&gclid=CjwKCAjw8IXMBRB8EiwAg9fgMKonjIevRSbvI8d0-UJtoD58lhycb3eDPDPxvsvD3HQipm8Tpxem7BoCba4QAvD_BwE

$120 including delivery.

Or should I go for just a used vacuum since I really don't need a wet vac.

If it's anything like the Aldi vac that looks similar, you couldn't pay me to take one. Earplugs are mandatory and suction is terrible.

ok thanks.

was planning on using a baffle

and i forgot about my cyclone.
so don't need a huge container.

I've had one of theses for almost 3 years

https://www.godfreys.com.au/shopvac-super-20l-wet-dry?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIl5mY3aC41QIVnQoqCh0ljAeQEAQYASABEgJFkfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

While it comes with a 35 mm hose and fittings, it can take a 50mm hose on the inlet and outlet. I have a nylon type material bag fitted over the pleated filter. These are available from Bunnies.

6 months ago I attached it through one of Aldav's cyclones.

Works great but is noisy. I use it for the fence pickup on the router table, a connection to my circular saw, SCMS, disc and belt sander Etc.

Blast! That reminds me. My belt sander just hums as well. grrrrrr

I did see those wet n dry vac on godfreys.

The guy I spoke to at godfreys about my dead one said the wet n dry vacs aren't very good.
He might have been trying to sell me a household vac.

I don't believe it is good value, mainly because there are others of almost identical ilk that are far cheaper.

I too had a Wertheim vacuum cleaner for some years in the shed, finally bit the bullet and picked up a wet/dry vacuum cleaner with a 63.5mm standard outlet. Most if not all of the USA stuff runs a 63.5mm outlet system, in fact in the USA it is pretty much their standard for shop vacuums.

These days I have one I picked up from Godfrey's, it is 1400W. not wet/dry, just dry, cost about $39.95 at the time.

The second one I have is a Homelite from Bunnings, picked this up on special for $29.00 about 1½ to 2 years ago, it is a 1200W (maybe 1250W) unit I think.

Both work a treat for their intended purpose. Both of mine are hooked up to an individual cyclone for a single point dust collection unit on wheels.

I would suggest you go to someplace like Godfrey's, and/or Bunnings and listen to the individual machines running. You will soon know how loud any of them are. Not an issue doing this at Godfrey's, but a bit of a fiddle at Bunnings as they never seem to be able to find a power lead.

This is the Homelite unit I picked up.

Hmmmm. I had the Aldi vac, and agree with Elan - insanely loud, and I wouldn't accept money to take one now. I have little doubt that they come out of the same Chinese factory. The filters on them clog within nanoseconds, in my experience, thus rendering them worse than useless. Using a cyclone will help mitigate this but......read on....

The insidious part of these vacs is that they grind up the fine dust that gets through the lousy filter into superfine dust - and that's the dust that actually kills you, not the coarser stuff that gets trapped by nasal hairs and snot, or is coarse enough to get coughed up. The superfine (ergo invisible) dust can bury its way deeper into lung tissue. Furthermore, because it's invisible there is a double whammy - "nothing to see here, I can take my mask off" which just lulls us into a false sense of security, and we take in great lungfuls of invisible dust, feeling safe.

Gotta bite the bullet and spend the bucks on a very good quality vac, presuming you want to enjoy the hobby in 20 years time without the aid of an Oxy tank.

I've got an older one of these hooked up to a cyclone. It's mostly useless without it. The filter clogs in about 10 mins of use. The cyclone bucket fills before I need to clean the filter. Decent suction for a cheapie.

You can pay a bit more for one that has a plug on top. It's hooked up to a drop saw and seems to be going alright so far.

I use my Ryobi 30 litre shop vac regularly. It works fine, and I use replacement bags with it. I also use it in auto mode with hand power tools, where it turns on & off with the had power tool.
If i had to replace it today, I would buy a unit that is quiet/quieter.
When I purchased it, there was no 'dB' spec on it.
I would pay twice as much $, to have half as much noise. I think I paid ~$130 for it from the Green shed.
A friend has a shop vac that works just as well, but is much quieter.
You're a long time dead. Don't buy cheap tools. Especially tools that assist your welfare.

I don't have a death wish so the outlet of my wet/dry Vac., which has a 50mm pipe connection, is ducted through a hole in the shed to outside. Most wet/dry vacs have this type of outlet, which obviously can be used to blow if one requires that function.
i also have a cheap k-mart cyclone Vac with a Hepa filter that I use for some power tools. The Hepa filter is a pita as it needs to be changed frequently but its better then distributing fine dust. If I could Duct the outlet outside I would, and get rid of the Hepa filter. You have to order them from the distributor, who is in Melbourne so it costs about 1/2 what I paid for the Vac.:oo:

I have an AEG from Bunnings. Happy with it does all I need. Is it loud? I don't wear my hearing aids in the workshop so not an issue.

If it doesn't have a bag, don't bother.

I've always run my shop vac through a Triton dust bucket. By the time the air goes through bucket filter and then the HEPA filter in the vac, hopefully all the micro particles will have been trapped.

Wouldn't it be good if shop vacs were designed with an air exhaust which could be piped to the outside? I've never come across one which did.

My old CT33 can vent via a hose, not sure what the backpressure would do to the suction though.

If my understanding is correct, cyclones only trap the heavier stuff, micro particles only get picked up by the filters.

I forgot to mention I have a single car garage with roller doors as a work shed.

Not sure if having a single car garage with roller doors on either side (both always up when cutting) counts as outside or not.

A cross flow of air is a great start. My idea of outside is a place where you are not. The amount of fine dust which has settled on surfaces inside your garage is IMO
the best indicator of your needs.

OK so this might be a silly questions (and apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere), but can you build a mini enclosure for a shop vac? There are a few comments on the noise levels that they create, so i was thining, if you could make a mini box for them (allowing for air flow in and out) wouldn't that deaden the noise to a point?

barrysumpter

Yes. ~10db
Have a look on youtube.
Plenty of reference videos on this kind of build.

I was going to try the baffle/muffler first.
