Hi All,
An unusual request, I'm looking for small fans, any voltage and up to 50 mm in size. A friend and I use them on miniature Christmas Pageant displays, to cool the Microwave motors that run the various displays. Prepared to pay postage for them, also looking for transformers from mobile phones etc, and small Microwave motors.
Thanks in Advance,
Kryn

I am thinking that you need something like a fan in a computer and if so then computer shops should have them.

Just thought I'd ask on here to help in the recycling of items, instead of being thrown into landfill!!!!:oo:
We know we can buy new, but we like the idea of recycling old unwanted stuff.

I agree . . . . . but sometimes the cost of recycling becomes a bit OTP.
e.g. have you thought about the cost of moving 10 individual fans around the country - it could cost $8.50 (small 500g AP satchel) to deliver each individual fan.
If you are happy to pay that - that's fine but for the cost of the delivery of one old fan you get 10 new fans.
Folks don't have to put them in landfills there's always an e-waste station.

OTOH have you though about contacting mens sheds that specialise in computer repairs refurb.
I think Waneroo mens shed in WA does this.
They are likely to have stocks of used stuff.

Holy cow! Did you actually look at the prices Jaycar charges? The cheapest fan was $13.95 What kind of mere mortal would pay that kind of money for a bog standard fan?

Don't know if you got your fans yet Kryn, but the perfect source for small and extremely good quality fans are old servers. Most 2RU dual CPU systems have one or two banks of 60-80mm muffin fans, what you want are 1RU servers, these have 40mm fans. If you know anyone in IT your way, I wouldn't imagine it would be hard to get some. Even IT resellers that refurb old kit will have a large amount of stuff that's just too old to move, and most would be more than happy to help if they have them spare.

cheers, Ian

I just saw your also after power supplies, would standard 12VDC plugpacks (2.1mm inner/5mm outer for routers, modems, etc) suit you?

cheers, Ian

Thanks Ian, just what we're looking for, different voltages would be OK too, if you know of any, we use them for LED lights and other things. Re Jaycar, now you can see why I asked on here. Sometimes we use 2 or 3 of those fans on a float, and it gets expensive after a while.
How many have you got?

Yeah, $14 is just insane in my books! I can't help with the fans sorry Kryn, I do have a bunch from scrapped servers, but god knows which buried box of spare parts they're in right now. I can however send you a 3kg satchel of 12VDC ~1-2A PSU's (some may be 15VDC), if you can pm your address, I'll get them off to you early next week.

cheers, Ian

After damaging a few bibs and bobs using recycled PSUs make sure you check them out before using them. These days I check and write on them on gold texta what they really are before they go in my recycle box. The worst one I have seen output 21V for a so called 9V, but its not unusual for them to be 50% higher than stated rating.

You usually get that with the crappier unregulated PSU's, the ones we use are pretty good quality so any variance usually is negligible. Although the load drawn can also have an effect.

Thanks for that Ian, PM sent.:2tsup:
Thanks for that info Bob, my friend looks after the electric side of things, and he tests them before going into the various voltage output containers that he uses. Saves a lot of time when he's looking for a certain voltage item.
