At the mens shed we have an older version of this lime green 100 mm belt x 150 mm disc Ryobi sander.

The switch has burnt out and I replaced it with a new No-volt switch but now the sander runs the wrong way.

Apart from earth there are only three wires coming out of the motor one (blue) is a common or neutral, the other two (brown and black) go to the start and run coils.

Normally the way to reverse these is to swap either the leads over on one of either the start or run coil.

To do this I would have to open up the motor and find out where the ends of the start and run coil meet which seems odd because it was running the right way before I changed the switch.

I then went back to the burnt out old old switch and see that it had a small coil inside it which seems to have acted as a monetary connection to the start coil but for the life of me I cannot see how that would change the direction.

Anyone have a clue and does anyone know if parts are available for these machine

If you swap the start and run wires the motor will try to run in the oposite direction but if left that way it may overheat as it is not designed to run on the start winding.

Isn’t the coil inside the old switch part of the NVR magnetic coil that keeps the switch closed when there’s power but will open circuit with loss of power?
I did find this, not sure if it’s of any help

Yeah that's what I first thought as well but according to the main shed sparky it was not a NV switch and the coil is part of the starting mechanism - sort of acting like a centrifugal switch and can't see how it effects the motor direction. The sparky spent most of the morning trying to fathom it out. We sat down and looked at it together for about 20 minutes but I could see he wanted to spend some time looking at it on his own so I went and worked on the RAS brake. The Sparky is normally pretty good at sussing out these sorts of things but the direction thing has got us beat and I suggested I ask here to see if anyone has a clue.

I just found the coil thingy on a Ryoby Spare parts - its called a starter relay.
