Camphor Platter Edge Detail?

Hi All,

In the process of making a circular platter/cutting board for presenting cakes at functions etc.

The dimensions a circa 350mm diameter x 40mm thick and made out of camphor. I have had this drying for a few years, so it should be good.

It is designed for a 300mm cake with a selvage around the cake.

The question is, how can I decorate the wall of the platter?

I especially like a balled effect (I am sure that is the wrong term for it. :rolleyes:) Effectively it is 1/2 spheres around the perimeter of the platter.

Apart from hand carving, is there a way this can be done with a router/drillpress? Open to suggestions. :D

Tilt the table on your drill press 90 degrees with some sort of shop-made indexing head (unless you have a proper one)

If I removed the drill bit, how successful would I be on a slightly curved surface, using a drill press?

Would absolutely hate to be half way through a job, and have it all go awry. :?

It's only a curved surface until you drill below the curve, on a 350mm diameter that's less than 1mm deep. Essentially it's just a domed plug-cutter, so use it the same way.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that if you remove the pilot there's nothing cutting in the middle, so you might need to retract it so it's level with the rest of the bit.

Then I would still have a pilot hole in the beaded dome, which is not the look I am after.

Perhaps I should just go for a fluted side instead. :think:

Had another think; as long as you're not going too deep, with no pilot you'd just have a little nub so sand off
