View Full Version : Air/electric belt grinder/power file.

I bought an air belt grinder a while back, it has a 20mm wide belt so is a little bigger than the 10 mm B&D I bought earlier. Both were to be used in lieu of hand files which I can no longer use. The B&D is electric and works well, the 20mm air grinder is a little too air hungry for my compressor so simply won’t work.
I had an 18 volt motor from a cordless drill lying around so set to work converting the air grinder to electric.
The hole in the driving drum was 10mm whereas the electric motor shaft was 3mm so I turned up a 10mm bush, pressed it into the drum and drilled a 3mm centre hole, also drilling and tapping for a 3mm lock screw to secure the drum to the motor shaft.
After removing the air motor from the grinder I discovered the cordless motor was .20mm smaller in diameter than the mounting hole so I used a .20mm shim to take up the slack.

Thus far everything was going well so I slipped on a belt and connected to a 12 volt battery, eureka it works brilliantly.
All I need to do now is graft a couple of handles onto the sander and it’s finished. Very pleased with this job, certainly better than throwing the thing in the bin or paying $250 for a Makita power file.
I have a 12 volt, 5 amp power supply floating around somewhere I can use to power the thing.
Everything went well with this job, started this morning and was finished, aside from handles, by lunch.

Some pictures and a video.
