Hi Guys

I have been out of the woodworking scene for awhile but am back into it with a vengeance! Since the demise of Lazarides Timbers in Brisbane where can I lay my hands on some Tassie Oak and or Tasmanian blackwood??

I am wanting to make a dinner table and the missus wants the blondie colored wood.

Moxons are wholesale only these days and most are construction grade suppliers so what are the options in Brisbane?

Your help would be appreciated!

Cheers

Bryan

Watts wood on the south side is pretty good. Retailer prices, as you might expect, but they have a lot of species and it's set up so you can just walk in.

Garde timber has a lot of stuff. It's fairly pricey, in my experience, but he's a nice guy.

You might send a PM to tgcreations on here. I'm not sure if he is still in the business, but I would assume he is. He moved up to Burpengary a few years back, so it's a trek unless you're on the north side.

Another seller who I think no longer posts is In2Wood. You may be able to find him on Facebook. He's out in Bunya in the Northern Suburbs.

I used to buy Hoop Pine from the Sandgate Timber Mill and they had some hardwoods in there, but it's mostly a commercial planing mill. Possibly worth a call though. The owner is a nice guy named Bruce.

Otherwise, there's always MAPLEMAN :2tsup: and a handful of other sellers who post on here.

Don't miss a Maleny Wood Expo. That's the best day of the year if you're a woodie in Brisbane.

The Brisbane Timber and Working with Wood show is also good. TG Creations has a booth at both it and Maleny.

Check Gumtree too. I've found absolute gold on there. The best wood scores I ever got came from small deals on Gumtree.

Good luck,
Luke

It depends on your quantity but I contacted one of my local timber merchants and was impressed with the range they can offer. VSH Timbers in Virginia. They may have to order in what you want and it's retail pricing but they have a big range and can dress it for you if you like.
So that was dead easy without even shopping around.

I have been meaning to check out Natural Edge Timber in Albion, if I ever want a slab or some small interesting pieces but I've still got most of the stuff I purchased from the Maleny Wood show and from Mapleman so I haven't got around to it.

There's also Bootle Timber on the southside. They're easy enough guys to deal with and their prices seem to be pretty good. Unfortunately you can't pick through boards and select the ones you want, but I've found no issues with the timber I've bought from them.

Troy Lazarides now sells under the Mathew's Timber brand in Northgate/Banyo. All of your standard rough sawn furniture grade stuff. Blackwood, Tassy Oak, Vic Ash, Qld Maple, Walnut, White Oak etc.

He's located in a nondescript warehouse in Crockford Street towards the Nudgee Rd end.
