View Full Version : Unusual?

What with woodturners being known to try new and unusual tools and techniques, it came to mind that it would be interesting to see what unusual items have been put on a lathe and given a spin, other than wood, although if the wood were strange enough it might be interesting too. So, what is the most unusual thing any of you have seen turned on a lathe?

Have seen a few very unusual things turning on lathes, however they are mostly the ones holding the tools. I have also seen a few unusual things done on lathes, usually very scary http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/eek.gif but that's another story.

This one would have to be the most unusual thing I have ever seen actually turned on the lathe, it was done by a mad yank Dennis Stewart the inventer of the Sewart System of turning tools. A beautiful multi winged hollow form turned out of a pumpkin. Paper thin and translucent. A wonder to behold, but not nice to hold.

I saw some mushrooms turned from a single piece of timber while at Sanctuary Cove, the hood of the mushroom appeared to be made from paper until closer inspection revealed it was all one piece of timber for the ultra thin stem and hood. I would not be brave enough to touch these as they appeared extremely delicate.
Obviously not turned on 's 13 metre lathe.

Ah but they may have been!

Tis far easier to do delicate work on a big lathe than a small one. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/cool.gif

I tried turning a portion of a Salt block like we use for cattle. I thought it would produce a nice white piece. DO NOT DO THIS. I ruined a bandsaw blade, spent 3 days cleaning the bandsaw and lathe. It did look kind of neat but picked up water whenever the humidity changed and no finish would stick.
Lately I've been turning golf balls. I hollow them out and make little lids to be used as boxes. Be careful, some have pressurized centers. I get a lot more use out of them than when I actually tried to play the stupid game. John

Thanks for the entertainment.
The crazyest thing I've seen are bananas and other fruit made from Huon Pine.

I saw Ernie Newman the "top" turner do a very creditable job chasing a thread on a cvarrot! Honest!
