Does anyone know of a kitchen bench top company that may have CHEAP shorts?

I’m wanting to build a filling and engraving workstation and I’m needing a solid timber top.

I'm looking for a piece of solid hardwood bench top.

Min size-Preferred Size
900-1200mm Long
600-700mm Deep
35-40mm Thick

Fallback is MDF but it really kind sucks in the aesthetics and inspiring place to work dept.

As an option, what about an offcut of Caesar Stone, granite etc?

I have some from a kitchen renovation (although a bit shorter than your sizes, but still useable).

Are there any wrecking yards nearby? Kitchen pullouts are sometimes available cheap.
Is $199 too dear? Maybe these bamboo (https://www.highgrovebathrooms.com.au/bamboo-timber-vanity-top-1200mm/?utm_source=xtend&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=news_australia&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo--8_v_T2QIVE5W9Ch39rgQdEAYYASABEgIPifD_BwE)ones would work.

I have made a Router table top and a drum sander top by purchasing second hand desks. Melamine coated Cjipboard for one and Melaminine coated MDF. Both about 30 mm and solid. Cost about $60. About the size you are after.

It be lovely but I can’t shape it. I suppose I could extend the front with a plank of hardwood and shape that. Depends on the dimensions you have.

Cheap shorts = Expensive jocks ? Is it the same thing ?? :D

Just wanted to say that :)

There probably is Kitchen places that do Solid hardwood tops . I don't know who though .
1200 x 700 may be an off cut for them but for me its a side table top so has some value .

What I do have is some Yellow Stringy bark boards . They are dry, just came out of a shed where they sat sticked up for five years , have plain sections through to figured swirly grain with sap inclusions . Roughly looks like this with polish on them . look at the desk top.

. Yellow Stringybark Timber Desk | Christian Cole Furniture (http://www.christiancolefurniture.com.au/tables/desk/yellow-stringybark-timber-desk/index.htm)

They are 125 to 150 wide but only 25 rough sawn in thickness . They may finish up at 22 thick ?
For a couple of hundred $ Id machine and join them up to that size and you could cut it out and finish it. If you want a bit extra to add on to build thickness at the front and back and around the cut out you can have that too .

Looking at your setup, I think that solid timber would be the best option.

The big Green Shed has solid timber panels for a hundy quite often. 2400 x 600.

Cheap as. Not as flat as you think, but.

Cheers

I might be able to help out Dale, pretty sure I’ve got some shorts boards here that can be chucked over the jointer then feed through the thicky and glued together.

Give me a couple of days to check what I’ve got laying around.

ps can now walk in the shed

I thought IKEA's 'Timber Benchtops' were just veneer on particleboard... :(

That got me interested as my daughter is about to install a laundry... But from their website:
"The worktop has a 3 mm top layer of solid beech over particleboard." and
"Worktop with a top layer of solid wood, a hardwearing natural material that can be sanded and surface treated when required."

Years ago I built a workbench with two sheets of mdf glued together then a sheet of Masonite glued on the top, don't know if this idea helps, just throwing it out there.

You could do that in ply or chipboard - simply veneer the cut out.
