buying pine

So im pretty new to wood working and im not really sure about how to go about getting wood at the moment ive just been going to bunnings and getting what i can but i am just wondering what the most cost effective way of buying pine im not to sure about all the different terms of different cuts of wood either if someone could help me out with that it would be much appreciated.

p.s im in Brisbane if that helps

I buy pine from Bunnings too, in certain sizes only though, for specific jobs. There are other places to buy different timbers, depending on what side of Brisbane you are located. Southside is Watts Wood (Google them), Northside is Naturaledgetimber (Instagram them) at Albion. Where are you buddy?

Im at gordon park which is next to stafford so albion isnt to far away i want to build up a collection of wood so i can just make a project whenever haha

Natural Edge is great if looking for feature pieces/slabs etc but if you're looking for furniture grade timber to dress yourself then somewhere like Mathew's Timbers in Northgate would be the go on the North side.

...... i want to build up a collection of wood so i can just make a project whenever haha....

When I started looking at this hobby I was in your exact shoes, with no stock pile of wood. I would just have to go out and purchase wood for a project that I wanted to do. What I have found with time is that wood accumulates in my wood storage area. This happens via various ways from collecting off the street, being given some wood and by purchasing specific types.

Even friends will keep an eye out for you when they find out you have a wood working hobby.

If I was to make a large project I certainly do not have enough of one species of wood but if I was to make a small project then I should be ok.

gday mate.Im just starting out myself and have been sourcing timber from local yards.the packing materials that end up in the skip are an assortment of pine and hardwood that actually come up pretty good with a bit of effort.there is meranti , New Zealand and asian pine and its FREE.The guys at Doyles hardware are very helpful and also have a good range of timbers to buy.All good for starting out.
