I have often been attracted to the idea of shaving using a drawknife and some kind of holding device, but most shavehorses take up too much space for what will only ever be a part-time and occasional activity for me and the attempts to make devices to add to workbenches have never convinced me (especially as they often require yo to work standing up and one of the attractions of using a drawknife and shavehorse is that you are sitting down).
I am not a consistent user of Farcebook, but a week or so ago, I saw a post by Robin Fawcett (Treewright (http://www.treewright.co.uk/HOME.html)) about a different kind of holding device to use instead of a shavehorse. He called it a Bodger Bord, but I thought a legless shave pony might be a better name.
It is a board that sits on your lap and is held in place by a belt that goes around your lower back (aka ). A ramp is attached to the front of the board and the workpiece lies on that ramp. A standard blockhead and pedal arrangement, pivoting on the far end of the ramp is added to clamp the workpiece to the ramp. This means that there are no legs, that the device can be taken around with you easily and can be used wherever you want to sit.
Here's the diagram produced by M.W. Cuddy in 1998 that Robin added to his post and that Robin explained was his inspiration.

I have followed the plan pretty closely (for me). The only change was to make the space that is useable a bit wider and put in spacers from 20mm conduit to keep the ramp and blockhead cerntred.
Here's the result:

The last photo shows the pony being used by me and gives you an idea of how it operates.
All it lacks at the moment is the belt. That part is essential to enable the pony to be held stable and therefore to get proper clamping pressure by the blockhead on the workpiece, and I am just waiting for the $8 belt I bought on Fleabay to turn up.
Aside from being very portable and easy to use with an existing chair, the other advantage is how easy it is to store:

As you can see it folds up nice and flat - the picture shows it hanging against a curtain wall that is across the middle of my workshop. It is just above head height, so I won't run into it moving about the shop.
