Most of the products of my labours at the lathe this weekend. PNG Rosewood platter (thanks Euge), Red gum(?) screwdriver handle, and anonymous branch cup/bowl practice piece. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190210/0646a2565360b32f2f92b13fc5349704.jpg

Looks like you should be pretty happy with your endeavors. What is the wood the cup is made from?

Mystery tree wood.

Picked up from the roadside, north Brisbane. Not quite as pink as the photo suggests. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190211/7656ddebcb6217c12e276237ebfe63d6.jpg

This is what I was trying to achieve.

Still not entirely happy, finish could be better. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190211/59259301ef90ede977e2d6f941b650ae.jpg

Redbeard that is fantastic. With that live edge the finish looks spot on :2tsup:

Nice work Redbeard. Was the timber very green? Or hard? Hope the bark edge stays attached as it dries.

Nice work Redbeard. Was the timber very green? Or hard? Hope the bark edge stays attached as it dries. It felt ever so slightly damp on turning but given the heat of the day that went away very quickly. The pale sapwood turned very nicely, the dark heartwood was definitely harder but nothing a quick sharpen didn't help. Certainly the bark looks well attached.

I struggled a bit with tear out on the "uphill" side of the sapwood, where you're cutting into the end grain. Better sharpening and higher speeds should beat that, it is just a matter of practice.

I'm going to have to investigate some alternative finishes to Shellawax for these more irregular shapes. I took a couple of wacks to the knuckles rubbing the magic goop in. Best to avoid that where possible I think.

Thanks

Try tung oil half and half with turpentine.
