Adelaide, Sherwood 8in jointer

Hi All,I'm after a jointer for my man cave. We have Carbatec here in Adelaide, but the Sherwood is not only cheaper but also a few cms shorter, so it would better fit into my small workshop: https://www.timbecon.com.au/planing/jointers/8in-jointerUnfortunately Timbecon is only in Perth and Melbourne, but buying a machine that I never saw before is causing me some headache. Andy, the price difference will be made up when considering delivery from Perth or melbourne adding on another potential 80 dollars for the tailgate drop fee they may charge. Furthermore, judging solely on the photos of the sherwood, the fence rail system they use seems to take up more dead space behind the machine compared to the carbatec method. This is just going by eye but i'm sure you could get the dimensions from them. The good thing about the sherwood is that it has a 2hp motor compared to the 1.5hp carbatec motor.

I've got the carbatec 8". Once I calibrated it properly it's been an ok machine. They do not come well aligned from factory. Well, mine didnt.. But easy to adjust. Underpowered, too.

You are right, I just checked how much delivery is: 108,-- delivery + 80,-- drop off fee. So the difference is actually marginal. But Carbatec will also charge for delivery - a jointer of that size doesn't fit into a Wrangler.

Ah yep if you don't have a transport method like a trailer or similar i suppose carbatec would charge a delivery in Adelaide, too. If length in the workshop is an issue the sherwood seems ok for that price. At least it has the bigger motor capacity, too. The 1.5hp on the carbatec with spiral blades doing a full width 1.5-2mm cut gets bogged down in hardwoods.

I asked a Timbecon sales guy a few questions about the jointer and he told me that questions are only answered via their website. Weird enough but OK, I asked via the website. And didn't get a response for more than a week. This made me wonder what their after sales service might be. So I bought the Carbatec jointer and a dust extractor last Saturday. 1.1kW doesn't seem too bad and I work mainly with soft wood. I've been waiting excited for the delivery.

I've planed almost 200mm spotted gum (although in 0.5mm - 1mm increments) on the Carbatec 8" spiral head and you do have to control the feed rate but it gets the job done. As hurcoth said, you will have to do some setup on it, but the parallelogram adjustment system is dead easy. You'll need a nice long straight edge and good square. Grizzly has a setup video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihua13Z740Q) for their jointer that is nearly identical to the Carbatec.
