I have just made a Gavel for my 2nd cousin who recently stayed with me. She is a Judge in the UK, and although they don't use Gavels she thought it would a nice gimmick to have, so she chose a nice piece of blackwood, with a fantastic grain pattern.

I want to know what type of finish i should apply?

spray laquer?
eee, then shellawax glow?
shellac?
livos oil?

I am at a loss, I invite any and all suggestions, reminding you, it will not be used to condemn someone to the tower.

All good choices of finish. I have been liking Livos oil at the moment. I think it would work really well with blackwood

Not fully finished yet. The handle is, and now need to change jaws to remount the head. its more symbolic rather than useful, but can be used if she feels the need. It can sit on her desk next to the tiger myrtle fountain pen and Coolabah burl coolmint bowl I made whilst she was here.

im even thinking of just a few coats of danish oil, waxed out and buffed.

Given that it's going over the pond to the ol' bailey where many brands we consider common (and their proprietary mixes) are lesser known, shellac or DO would be my choices,

That way, if it ever needs refinishing it'd be a simple matter for whoever is tasked with it.

Besides, they just feel good to handle. :D

Here is the finger chuck I have whipped up, to be able to turn the gavel head around and finish off the second end. I crudely used it to part the end yesterday but will now put the slots in to get a better grip.

luckily I had some SS hose clamps laying around, ready for some segmented turning I was going to do one day. So many ideas, so few hours in the day to do it all.

2nd coat of danish oil, rubbed in with 0000 steel wool. 2 more coats then glue together. It's all from 1 piece of 50x50 tas Blackwood, I had to improvise for the strike plate and cut the remaining section in half, dowel and glue together to get the 80mm round that you see. I have managed to match the grain quite well so my cousin won't know it's 2 pieces.
