Next Project: Natural edge bowl

I have started my next wood turning project and probably a bit more advanced for someone that is getting back into wood turning. I have made a start on making a natural edge bowl the wood I am using is Plum which came from a plum tree that was cut down from my back yard a couple of months back so it is still green. I am taking the best looking logs to keep aside for wood turning and the not so good ones are destined for the fire place next winter. this bowl is being done from a log that is 230mm long and 130mm diameter I have debarked and flattened the areas where the drive and tail stock spindles had to go and also drilled holes for the spindle tips to go into and yes I am using a face shield as I always do when working with power tools and the lathe and I have made sure the tail stock spindle is locked down tight with the locking nut and regularly stopping to check to make sure nothing is starting to let go, lathe speed is set at 850 rpm which is the lowest speed my lathe will do.

As soon as I have got the outside turned it will be going onto a face plate so I can get at the inside as I do not currently have a chuck to use

Instead of using a scroll chuck. screw a waste block 25mm thick and the same diameter as the face plate. Turn a spigot on the waste block the same diameter as the bowl base and glue the two together with aquadhere. When finished turn a shallow groove just clear of the bowl base and then separate with a hand saw for safety. Clean up the bowl base with whatever tools you have at hand.

Thank you very much for that suggestion Jim much appreciated and I will do this next as the bowl is ready for the face plate I have some polyurethane glue that I use for repairing plane totes so I will use that to save buying some aquadhere, I did actually turn a sacrificial piece into the base of the bowl as I was going to screw it on with a piece of waste wood between the bowl and face plate but your idea sounds much better

Starting to shape the inside of the bowl after glueing and screwing the bowl onto a waste piece of wood that is screwed to the faceplate I also formed a recess for the bottom of the bowl to sit in

Done just in the process of hand sanding it then i can move onto the finish which will be shellac and some beeswax polish

Hand sanding done to the best i can to get rid of gouge marks definitely adding a scraper chisel to the three lathe chisels that I have been getting by with. Finished with some shellac
