View Full Version : The tallow wood bowl

In 1983 I planted some native trees. Among them was a tallow wood. In January this year the tallow wood fell down and blocked the road in front of the block. The local council cleared the road and the trunk, 450mm diameter now lies in waiting on our block. At the top of the tree there was a large fork that showed potential. In Early February the fork was split in half and rough turned into a bowl. The bowl blank was stored in a rubbish bin full of shavings.
Last week I checked the blank and decided it was ready for finishing.
This is the block in the lathe in early February

This is the finished bowl.

It finished 305mm diameter x 75mm deep. Finished with a coat of sanding sealer and two coats of sprayed lacquer.
Fairly happy with the outcome even if I did have to grow my own timber... :)

Perhaps a few more of those trees should fall over. Looking forward to seeing its book matched sibling.:;:;
