First bit of turning for a while. A vase made from black bean, stands about 210mm high, the centre portion is 160mm diameter and 50mm thick. The centre is hollow and segmented, with the panels about 8mm thick. The flowers were cut from black bean veneer with a laser, and glued onto the panels. Coloured with felt tip pens. Probably easier to laser the panels directly, but I was after a 3D effect. The top was oval turned. Finished wit several coats of sanding sealer and two sprayed coats of lacquer.

Very nice work!.
When you say, "The top was oval turned", then I wish you had included a picture from above to show the oval turned top.
Any chance of a picture from above? Not really on the ball here with oval turning.
Also a wee bit jealous of those tropical timbers you are using that we never see in timber stores down here.

I built a wooden chuck that turns ovals, instead of round objects. I seem to recall doing a thread on the chuck some time back. Will have a look to see if I can find it. Many of the timbers I use are no longer commercially available, because of that well thought :(( out heritage listing of the rain forests. I still have small quantities (tiny actually) of some of them sourced from private supplies.

Thanks PP. Those pictures show it really clearly and it looks impressive.
We are suffering similar well thought out heritage listings down here too.

The oval chuck, I have built four so far. The original idea came from one of David Springett's books that had full details for building it. The first one was entirely made from wood. That one wore quickly so the next one use aluminium instead, that one wore quickly too. Then I introduced a bearing and the one is still in use. The first one was built about 20 years ago. This photo was taken with the cover removed.

I have a video of it working, I just have to work out how to upload it.
