G'day to all, I have a problem. I have an AYAO MC1018 Mini lathe (1218) model. I have just purchased a NOVA G3 Chuck and the problem is the adaptor that came with the AYAO chuck wont fit the NOVA chuck. I purchased a NOVA adaptor that fits the NOVA chuck but it's not the same thread as the drive shaft on the lathe.:((:((:- Can anyone out there help me??????
Cheers

Essentially you need to figure out what the thread size and pitch is on your spindle. Once you have that information you can then order the correct adapter for your Nova G3 chuck.

Here is how it is done by Nova.

Determining Your Lathe Spindle Thread to find the correct NOVA insert adapter - NOVA (https://www.teknatool.com/thread/)

According to an advertisement for that lathe, the spindle is said to be M33x3.5. The Teknatool (Nova) and our local Carbatec web sites do not show that size insert for sale. Teknatool advises "If you have reliable information for your spindle thread size but there is no match on the chart, you may have an unusual lathe that NOVA doesn’t have an adaptor for. You will need to purchase a blank chuck or a blank insert/adaptor and get it threaded to your requirements.". If it was me, I would seek out a member who has an M33x3.5 spindle on their lathe to make sure that is what you have. Or just buy that size nut and see if it fits your spindle.

Thank you very much. You are right, the spindle is a 33x3.5. do you know anyone who has one for sale. Vicmarc will make me one for $110.00.

How about an adapter/converter to fit the spindle so that the spindle was then, for example, M30x3.5. Might sound expensive but would be cheap in the long run as you could then buy M30x3.5 inserts for all of your Nova chucks, new or second hand, (one is NEVER enough) and M30x3.5 face plates and inserts are readily available and cheap. I guess you have already contacted Ayao to see if they can supply one? I reckon I can guess the answer to that one .

This overseas site shows a spindle converter from M33x3.5 to 1" 8TPI available https://www.thewoodturningstore.com/hurricane-turning-tools-lathe-headstock-spindle-adapter-converts-m33-x-3-5-to-1-x-8tpi/ to give you some idea of what can be done. Definitely worth a look.

Vermec here in Australia will make you whatever thread to thread size spindle adaptor you specify and for less than Vicmarc. See here (http://www.vermec.com/store/p38/Spindle_Adaptor.html).
