Timber order from WA and a surprise

Hi just going thru a 500kg box of timber I bought in WA, and found this Minnaritchie .Has anyone turned this timber ? it,s a new one for me, but excited by the looks of it maybe a natural edge bowl,

Ian, May I suggest you treat it as you would Gidgee, Mulga etc or any other desert acacia. Very fine grained, slow growing etc. Its likely not to be completely dry (due to its size) even though its a dryland species. Quite a few species are called Minneritchie (see the book I gave you).
Its exceedingly hard, heavv and finishes beautifully but I dont know about how it turns. Euge

As Euge says like many other desert Acacias. There are 2 types in WA and the one from QLD is different again but all the same species (at present). The main difference is colour and size. All are hard and have a high silica content so can be brutal on the chisels, similar to JAM from WA, but finishes beautifully.

In Qld the old timers found the rock opal by finding the Minirichie, these days I find the Minirichie by finding the opal. In WA I don't know, there is that much gold they don't bother with the opal, or maybe its not there I don't know. Its bark is very distinctive so easy to find once your in the right area
