G'day
The club I am in runs three craft sales a year and it is becoming increasingly evident that the majority of buyers expect to pay with a credit card nowadays . We are a small club of about 25 members with about 12 sellers and it would be much too expensive to use a credit card reader from a bank . I have investigated the "Square reader" system which only charges 1.9% commission on sales and works through a smart phone but it seems square reader requires the user to have an ABN number .How are other clubs solveing the problem of credit cards ?
Although there are ATM machines only a 5 minute walk away , I know we lost sales at our recent sale when we were unable to accept credit cards.

Ted if your club is Incorporated as I found out recently they need to have an ABN this maybe NSW main body who have one already and you may be able to utilise that. Seems the new regulations (https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/associations-and-co-operatives/associations/starting-an-association) were slid in a while ago. I was surprised to find the group I am in here had one.

I thought about the square reader & stopped when I saw the ABN stuff.

Discussed it with a friend who has a reader & she said you ignore the ABN when applying. She has a reader but no ABN.

Hi Ted, we recently bought the square reader and dock at my club and it is fantastic. We don’t have an ABN so just have to ignore that part when setting it up, but once you’re up and running it is very easy to use.
We have also found that it is almost expected that you have some electronic means of payment nowadays at the markets etc.

hope this helps.
cheers

Hello Ted, funnily enough, this subject was raised in discussion last week at the club, that I am a member of.

I'll have a look at prices etc for further discussions.

My barber faced this issue too, and ended up buying a PayPal card reader. It simply connects to the PayPal app on a phone via bluetooth.

As it uses PayPal, all you need is a PayPal account.

Kind regards,
Lance

Just too push the point home,
I can count on two fingers how many times I’ve had cash, the old school stuff, with pictures on it,
In my wallet in the last month ,
Nearly 99 percent of my daily transactions are tap an go.

I just never seem to actually have CASH on me at all these days.
Actually the only cash I carry is loose change in the console of my work Van.
Probably $6.55 lol.

Cheers Matt.
