Alum : Pottassium ALuminium Sulphate but formula can vary, some people use it to extract broken taps from non ferrous metals - well documented in lots of places on internet see link "Alum broken tap" (https://www.google.com/search?biw=1068&bih=595&sxsrf=ACYBGNT-HmGC0u7GFxh7jhPBlsgESnTcHg%3A1576563198110&ei=_nH4XculBvHXz7sPqaeQGA&q=alum+broken+tap+aluminium&oq="Alum+broken+tap"&gs_l=psy-ab.1.0.35i39j0i22i30l2.478507.481317..488271...1.3..4.327.1277.0j3j2j1......0....1j2..gws-wiz.....10..0i71j35i302i39j35i362i39.BNusPWfQ30U)

After a few weeks of trawling lots of different shops & internet I found a couple of easily accessed and affordable sources of Alum.

Brown & Wigg (stock & station agents - Alum used by famers to settle muddy dam water) Huge Bags estimate 30kg bags approx $40 great price but what to do with remaining 39.8kg ?

Asian Supermarkets ( used to keep vegetables crispy when making pickles ) 100grams for $2 - $3 they even have a variety of types ie solid blocks for aftershave and different sized crystals for cooking. They call it Fitkari (cooking) or Hero Original Alum (shaving)

Asian supermarket was opposite Clayton Railway station Melbourne.
