I wanted to turn somenatural edge bowls and I needed a chuck to hold the workpiece. This is what Icame up with. The chuck is made from spotted gum, hard and dense - .99 specificgravity. It is made from two separate pieces and glued together. The back isslightly recessed for the metal faceplate to maintain concentricity for futuremountings. The spigot is 32mm by 50mm bored through with 12mm bit and hollowedat the end to match the brass cone and is cut into 4 segments. The base of thespigot is slightly larger than 32mm to jam the workpiece and the other endexpands when the rod is tightened. A 32mm hole is bored in the bark side of theblank and mounted on the chuck. I removed the bulk of the waste with thetailstock for support then glued a sacrificial bit of wood to the base for adovetail tenon and finish turned the outside. It worked very well and I hopethe pictures are self-explanatory. C&C welcome.
