I was given a whole Tagua nut when I ordered some tagua slices to cut on my scrollsaw. Have been thinking of carving the nut into a wombat or elephant etc..

Would standard (cheap) carving chisels work for doing something like this? has enyone experience in carving tagua nut?

I doubt if cheep carving tools will work for you.
I find that they are a poor steel,to thick at the shoulder of the bevel and (for me anywhy)I find it hard to get a edge let alone trying to keep the edge. Although have never tried to carve a Tagua nut.Are they very hard and how big are they.

These nuts are very hard. They carve very well, but you will need extremely sharp chisels, and I doubt that cheap ones will do the job. Using them you will just be scratching the nut.
