Gday
Have bought an old lathe and set it up.
Only problem is the head chuck keeps cutting into the wood end whenever I press hard on the piece. The chuck has 2 screws aswell as the centre piece..the screws just run a groove into the wood every time their is a jam..therefore making it pretty useless.
Was hoping to add some pics but where is the link

Clearly very crudely home made and not of much use, what are you using in the tail stock, tail stock centre needs to spin freely either a live centre or dead centre with lubrication
head stock centre needs to be modified in my opinion to have any success with it, there a few different designs this is the most popular

Mick, there seems to be more threaded holes in that spur drive. The problem at this stage could be blunt tools and too aggressive attack on the wood. Would suggest you remove the outer bits and replace fit four screws into the holes, then file or grind radial flats on the four screws.

If you can remove the existing spur drive, and if there is a morse in the shaft. then a new driving spur will help.

Thanks Jim and China. It was only cheap but this bloke did some beautiful work with it.
Will try and replace the drive .
