Some ally polishing Done on the bike I'm restoring. The ally was badly oxidised and pitted, looked like the bike was parked in the ocean for a few years. All the fasteners were completely rusted out along with the spokes. I mounted the hubs on the lathe to remove the casting bridges between fins and to true up the hub. The rims, aside from being badly oxidised, were also badly damaged on the edges from tyre levers. Ground the edges down a little, then polished them. I also resurrected the fork legs, brake backing plate, tappet covers, breather box, carb tops, float bowls, dip stick, cam chain adjuster, starter ends, top triple tree, brake fluid branch, engine side covers and some engine brackets and side panels I made up.
The side panels are a story unto them selves: Beaten up from 1.5 aluminium on wooden forms I made, then twisted and bent to follow the frame rails. They are mounted with rubber grommets and positive stop nuts I turned up on the lathe. I've been polishing aluminium for different projects for years, so while I hate this dirty job, the results are worth it I think.
The bike will be basic black, so the polished aluminium looks nice. You can also get smaller wheels mounted on 6mm shafts, great for polishing inlet tacts, combustion chambers and so on, if your that way inclined.
