Hi All,

I recently purchased this old Tough branded lathe. I've read the previous threads on the Tough lathes but I've been having problems identifying which model it is. It's also missing it's tailstock and tool rest so if someone has a lead on those, that would be great too. I'd to restore it to be as original as possible. The bed is 104cm long and there's 20cm swing.

Cheers,
Zac.

There’s a guy on Facebook marketplace called “ Bill Petritziklis”. he has a tailstock for sale. Not sure how to link it though, you’ll have to search i think, good luck

Ive been off Facebook for a couple of months but I'll try and find a work around. I've also stripped and repainted the base which I'll post some pics of tomorrow when the second coat dries.

Cheers,
Zac.

Well the base has now been repainted. I went with a blue 'hammered finish' metal paint. It's only touch dry at the moment but it will be interesting to see how it looks with the lathe on there. The lathe is currently in pieces on my workbench as I'm using the opportunity to replace the bearings and drive belt. More updates to come.

Well the hunt for a replacement vintage Tough tailstock is proving difficult. Neil S I kindly provided some leads for replacement parts. Im always amazed how willing people on the forum are willing to help. Bad news on the new old stock front though as Len Smith is proving difficult to get hold of, as may well be expected given the situation in Melbourne. So a new old stock Tough tail stock may not eventuate. My next pursuit was a matching vintage Woodfast tailstock however Graham from Woodworking Solutions told me this morning that all old parts are long gone. So I thought maybe a new Woodfast one will fit, and the helpful team at Beyond Tools are currently helping me out. If that doesn't work I figure my options are to see if there's another new brand that will fit, or to then try and make one. We'll see what happens and I'll keep you updated. Oh, and I'm getting three phase power to my shed which is exciting.

Cheers,
Zac.

Edit - I followed up Riverbuilder's lead. Is this the one that you meant? I spoke to the seller today but he doesn't know the make. Looks like something that could be made to fit though.

Yes that’s the one. If you need help with modifying it, pop on over to the metalwork forums and post a thread there, heaps of talented skilled people on there who could help for sure, good luck.

I contacted the seller just now to say that I want the tailstock, and it had sold this morning. Well you snooze you lose I guess. Thanks for the lead on this Riverbuilder, I'll have to be quicker next time!

If all else fails a last possible resort is the WA woodturners association, there were members with Tough lathes.Tough made a lot of lathes at their factory in Belmont WA back in the second half of last century .

I have a Tough lathe in storage that you could sabotage for parts. My headstock doesn’t lock so it’s a PITA to remove chucks from. It comes with all of the original faceplates and pulleys but was originally on a frame with a 3 phase motor. Your stand is nicer. Mine has been attached to a mechanical variator and motor so it gives mechanical adjustable speed. It was a good idea but in practice required belts that were too long and vibrated the new frame, which was too light. The frame has retractable wheels so it is easy to move. I have considered selling the variator by itself for someone to attach to a lathe or to make their own drum sander but decided I want to get rid of the whole thing. PM me if you are interested. For what it is, it’s cheap as chips. You could onsell the variator and get most of the cost back.

As they say in footy "what a difference a week makes!" Many thanks to Graeme (Bookend) for giving me an offer I couldn't refuse on his old Tough lathe. Here she is complete!* The three phase outlet is going on the post to the right of the lathe. Got the sparky coming this week. Just want to say thank you to everyone on here who has helped me find parts and given advice. I've really been blown away. I'll post some final pics when the new paint job is finished and everything is in place and going.

Thanks again,
Zac

*Not actually complete. Need to find a live centre and put the lock pin back in once it comes back from the fixer. And reattach the outboard sanding rest. But close enough.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200912/6968e8191b7d4ea9da53c4040755a433.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200912/5a0593676b54c95fccfd13df19eb6cc1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200912/7a31b5b656ea0b5bc020406b73b66dc0.jpg

Nice meeting you Zac. You will notice the tailstock has no hole for a knockout bar. When you buy a live centre, get a good one with a long #2 Morse taper. The live centres “knock out” by winding the tailstock wheel back. Cheap Chinese ones are too short.

Thought I'd share this exciting moment with you. It's plugged in and running. It's really smooth and just hums. I'll likely anchor it to the floor just to remove any residual vibration. I couldn't resist putting a piece of wood in and having a test. It's lovely. More updates to come.

I can understand and appreciate your satisfaction. But, paint the tailstock before the turning bug bites too hard. :U

The fixer did a great job brazing the cast iron parts for the outboard sanding rest back together. I've included some pics below. More of the whole finished paint job to come.

Here she is mostly done. There's a few little things to go but I'll end the thread here. Now that I have a decent lathe I'm organising some classes to learn the basics. Neil Turner runs classes that I'm hoping to book in for November. Thanks again to everyone for their help - special mentions to NeilS, Riverbuilder and Graeme for helping me out re sourcing the missing parts.

Cheers,

Good job Zac,
When I painted my Vicmarc and I wanted a colour close to original.
I contacted Vicmarc and they said a blue hammertone from the hardware.
Well the blue I thought looked as close to the vicmarc blue is not but yours looks very close
So can you tell me what brand of hammertone you used ?

RickHi Warrick, it's just the Rust Guard Hammered Finish by White Knight from Bunnings. There's only one shade of blue in their range. Cheers, Zac.

Well done Zack!

The previous owner used the outboard rig for sanding, but the original purpose for that was for outboard turning. The advantage of that is that you can turn some larger sized platters on that than can fit over the inboard bed. Only issue with that is that you will be turning with reverse rotation, so some tools will have to be reground for that, and the thread is left-hand, so your inboard chucks would need a separate L-H adapator. Those are not as readily found nowadays, but someone like Enzo at Home (https://www.vermec.com/) could make one up for you.

Of course, you can continue to use the outboard rig for sanding if you have no need for outboard turning...:U
