Hi Folks,
one of the first jobs I need to tackle at my new house is a decent-looking residence for my 5 hens who are in need of a new abode. Does anyone have any plans for building coops? I envisage the design will be totally birdproof to prevent theft of their food by unwanted visitors and would incorporate a nesting box which is accessible from outside the coop/run. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Cheers

"Pask Makes" has a YouTube video showing a chook house build. Quite spiffy, from memory!

Cheers Yvan

I have 6 chooks in a 2.4 x 2.4 enclosure it’s about 3 metres tall as I needed it big enough for me to get in and clean it. If we are a way for a few days or if work hours don’t coincide with daylight that seems to be enough space to stretch. Generally they are outside all day.

Roost is 90 x 35 on edge about 1.6 long (seems to be long enough) I have also read somewhere that 32 mm round gal pipe is also suitable.

3 x nest box which are flush with the internal wall and stick out the back with a lid for access.

open door and chooks have the run of the yard (dog has a seperate section of yard when she is outside)

close door every night to keep out foxes.

grandpa feeder, best ever, no problem with wild bird and also keeps the rats and mice out of the feed too.

cheers

Thanks wrongwayfirst. All great ideas. We want to make it totally enclosed to keep wild birds from stealing their food and crapping in their water bowls too.
Cheers

grandpa feeder no stolen food and just in the last month I have installed drinking cups, no stolen water. I might add we had a rat problem albeit a native rat SWMBO states a rat is still a rat.

WoW! Thanks for the link to the drinking cups. At present, we just use stainless steel bowls. Trouble is, the chooks tend to stand on the rim to drink and drop debris in them. This is the perfect solution. Plummed off a water tank would be perfect. Cheers
