Skew ChiDAMN!!

OK, so I've had a dozen or so large astronomy related posters I've wanted to hang for quite some time now.
I've had little luck searching on-line for the plastic extruded channels that were popular in the 70's... they're either far too short (as in A4 page lengths, while I need them in the 1.2-1.3m range) or well 'n truly over-priced.
During my googling I noticed that most commercially used poster hangers - such as for shop windows - are magnetic nowadays and I suspect they'd be more suitable for what I want anyway. But I'm a tightwad and why buy when I can make?
The ceramic magnets I have to hand, 12x7mm, are probably a tad too thick for use in thin timber slats. The science lab, back in high school, had posters that were hung by the simple expediency of ripping a 1/2" dowel down the middle & re-gluing 'em onto the poster with a couple of small wire brads for strength.
I'd be happy with that sort of dimension, but not much larger. (Nor with glue or brads damaging the poster. ;) )
I also want to cover the magnets/washers with felt or a protective tape to give some measure of protection to the poster paper. I'm guesstimating that this will add up to about 3mm separation between magnets & washers, or magnet pairs if I go that way.
I reckon 'tis a safe bet that I'm not the first member here to try this, so does any-one have any advice as to size/type of magnets, recommended spacing, type of protective tape, etc?
More than anything I'd like to have a ballpark figure as to how many to buy so I can do all the purchasing in one shopping expedition and get down to building without the need to waste several hours 'running back into town' due to poor guesswork.
So... any suggestions?
