Now that assembly isn't going so well I've put a better light in the works. The shoulder for the thrust bearings is catching on the towershaft tube. It wasn't too bad on the way out as that side is tapered. The tube has a ding that may rub on the shaft so i'll turn up a bullet and pull it thru with 12mm threaded rod. There are no obvious fasteners retaining the tube so I assume it is held in place by goop. As it dates from the 60's a phenolic was most likely used for this job.
Any suggestions please for a structural sealant that can live with oil and operating temp. I think Kearns built up the gearbox before the collumn was erected and the tube was the last thing driven into place and puttied to seal the oil in. This saga has delayed my boiler having tubes fitted and lots of other work. Not happy.
