Having had adopted brothers into our family, when I was younger and now daughter & her hubby are continuing the tradition, I like to keep aware of trends and all the protocols and crap that goes on.

But I would love clarification of what happens in USA you seem a lot more lax about it all.

Just nosey curious.

Having been a little flippant about you thread, which is very admirable I would like to redeem myself by recounting a story from Millmerran. A local lady put her name down for adoption/fostering. She was locally employed, but single. The day after her paperwork was approved she was contacted to take two children urgently. They were about three and four years old. A short while later a third child was put her way being about six months old. The children, three boys, are siblings and apparently they are now "hers" in that the environment they were extracted from was so bad that the paperwork is stamped never to be returned. That was a few years ago now.

The children are delightful and one was recently seen in a supermarket with his adoptive mother and he was the one with the shopping list. His task was to find the goods in the store. I am told he reveled in this authority and did very well. I'm not sure of his age but under ten.

I am reminded of an old joke that more or less explains the attitude of 75% of the folks here.

Two children were playing by the shore, one a Caucasian boy and the other an African American girl. The boy and the elder of the two, was asked, "Who is your friend?" The boy answered, "Oh that is my sister." Again the boy was asked, "Isn't it odd that she is darker than you?" The boy answered, "Oh yeah. One of us is adopted but I forget which."

That is pretty much the attitude of most here, but definitely not all, here in the US. Unfortunately there are people with their heads in a dark and smelly place everywhere. (Cone on. This is a family forum.)

That is further amplified by when I figured out that the man purported to be my biological father was not, I screamed, cheered, was banging the desk. My wife comes running into the room asking "What is wrong?" I told my wife and explained how I figured out that he wasn't my father. She looked at me and with a giggle says, "Ya know, I've often wondered about that."
