Vintage Ixion manual drill press

Run out of time to use or restore the press so decided to move it on.

German made, age probably pre WW1, it appears to be the second version of the design and an advance on their chest drill design.

After loading the drill and selecting which speed cranking to use, turning the crank will cause the drill to rapidly go down to the job surface. One there, the resistance to further movement down will start the flywheel turning and friction on the flywheel shaft, adjusted by the knob below the flywheel will set the amount of pressure applied by the drill to the job. The pressure is maintained while cranking continues reducing the risk of drill breakage or work hardening the job



The drill is retracted rapidly when cranking is stopped or the crank wound backwards.

Though it has surface rust on unpainted surfaces it is in good working order or suitable for use or a restoration project. All parts are original, the base has been fractured at some time and welded.

I now own 4 drill presses, 2 in Melbourne, 1 in Ballarat ,1 in Sydney in a niece’s car.

This kind of stuff I can’t figure out.

I know at least one drill press will be finding a new home in the future.

Drill arrived today, unfortunately the previous job at welding the base, has similar appearances to a worm lying on concrete, no penetration at all.

So the base will have to be welded “probably”

This is in know way laying blame on Arthur, he had explained that the base had previously been repaired.

That's a bummer. Your would have thought that whoever welded that would have ateast tried to get it straight.

At least you have a base. I had to make a complete new one....

Still looking for a cast iron one, but they are too rare. One day I might get a metal one fabricated.

I think it was probably “welded” square but there was no penetration of the weld, it’s just sitting on top, or it may just be braced, I haven’t had a good look.
But unfortunately what ever it was didn’t survive being posted from Sydney too Melbourne.


You could have one cast, if you make a wooden pattern, happy to help with pictures measurements there.
