Last weekend I searched 3 supermarkets 4 chemists a health food store and Bunnings for some parafin wax, no luck anywhere. Does anyone out there know where to buy this stuff, I'm located at Frankston, Vic?

Hi Grumpy John,

I bought some recently from Timbecon (convenient as I'd ordered a few other bit 'n bobs simultaneously).

Depending on what you want it for, a simple old-fashioned white candle will do pretty much as well.

Cheers!

I bought some last week from a petroleum distributor, comes in 25kg bags down here in Hobart. 25kg cost me $83.50, might be advisable to share with a couple of other.

Candle making shops - we have at least 2 specialist 'candle only' shops in Sydney, sell parafin wax as well as steartin (parafin hardener).

Try the craft & hobby shops - Lyncraft used to sell it too, before they developed $$$ problems. Its used for candles (duuh) and fabric dyeing such as batik.

It is also used to seal the tops of home-made jam & pickles, so specialist food/chef's outlets may have it too.

All depends on what you want to use it for............

I was hoping to use it to seal turning blanks as it used to be really easy to get at the supermarket or local hardware.

Suggest you let your fingers do the walking - ring around the smaller hardwares like Mitre 10.

While I don't think it performs quite as well as wax, liquid grain sealer is a lot simpler to use. You can get it mailed from The Woodsmith.

I would have thought that living in Melbourne would have been dead easy to locate this stuff, pick up the phone book look under candle makers and i am sure that with the size of your city there would be dozens of them, ring a few, i will bet that you will find more than one willing to sell you some wax.

I've got plenty, buy it by the tonne. Don't use candles for endgrain sealing they have steric acid in them as a hardener and this makes it flake off the timber after a little while. The best endgrain wax is a mix of beeswax and paraffin about 50/50. Beeswax should be readily available from your local apiarist. If you really must have some paraffin wax I have a few 4 kg blocks @ $12.50 each and a couple of 25 kg bags $65. Not interested in selling smaller quantities.
