Spindle mystery

The below photos are of a spindle which came to me with a lot of other bits and pieces purchased from someone selling on behalf of a 92yo who was moving into care. Most other stuff was woodwork oriented.
It seems to be a very nicely executed homemade item with a flat belt drive and an M12x1.0 nose thread.
I'm hoping someone might recognise the thread or something else about it that will give me a clue to it's previous use.
Any ideas?
