Like MIG welding but not the same

While goofing off and wasting time the other night I watched this video on the making of a LPG gas tank, at the 20min mark the tank is loaded into an semi-automated 'mig' welder that welds the seams, however the weld pool is not shielded with gas but with granules that are fed onto the weld pool from an overhead hopper. At the completion of the weld operation it looks as if the operator chips off slag so I'm assuming the 'granules' are the same material used to coat welding rods, can anyone confirm this ?


First time I've seen welding done this way.
