I've recently started doing a bit of fullbore target shooting - Target Rifle class - so aperture sights and sling. None of this fancy telescopic sights and solid rests etc.

Being a relative tightass when it comes to things I think I can make myself, I'd like to play around with making up an adjustable front sight similar to this one:
Sumo 30mm Height Adjustable Front Sight - Sumo Sight Australia (http://www.sumosight.com/sumo-30mm-height-adjustable-front-sight/)

The vertical adjustment serrations aren't a drama, but I've never played around with cutting fine threads in aluminium for the actual sight tube part.
The central support piece is externally threaded, then the tubes screw on front and back with either fixed aperture rings or adjustable ones made by a few specialist manufacturers such as Gehmann.
From what I can find out so far the thread is 1-1/4" x 28tpi

I'm thinking that the aluminium needs to be pretty hard for a start to be able to cut a clean thread - so something like a 6061T6, and also needs to be held in something better than a 3 jaw or it will easily distort with only having a 2-3mm wall.
Probably a larger piece of round stock bored to size then slit to allow clamping the workpiece in a normal chuck.
And a nice sharp HSS tool?

Anyone played around with optics for cameras or telescopes etc that can offer some tips.

Steve
