Posted in the tools gloat thread a few weeks ago that I’d picked up a 300mm pedestal.
Decided to start refurbing it today.

On the whole it’s solid, despite the two cans of WD that went into getting apart it did actually come apart reasonably easily. The exception was the motor mount, this had to be cut to get it out because the mounts were rusted to the pivot shaft. One of the mounts cracked while I was pressing the shaft out, that woke me up…. I did shear off a couple of wheel cover screws, but I was expecting that and have a plan to replace them with cap screws.

The biggest issue is the driven shaft that holds the wheels. There’s a significant amount of wear where the seals were at each end and I’m not sure what to do about it yet.
The bearings are flogged, one fell apart wile I was pressing it off but neither has spun in its housing so it’s just replacement.
Seeing as I have to replace the bearings anyway, I’m thinking sealed bearings, and just put a double lip seal back in and forget the grooves where the old seals were exist. If I go with sealed bearings the shaft seals are then literally just keeping the grinding crud out of that compartment.
I did contemplate filling it with Silicone Bronze but I’m thinking the heat input will bow the shaft.
If anyone has any thoughts on this please feel free to share..

One thing that surprised me is the wheel adapters where made from dead tree..

Parts are going for hot tanking and blasting next week, will update when there’s some forward progress to report.

Some pictures of the shaft attached, and also the hilarity that was extracting the old motor, the pulley was scraping the housing one side, and the armature bearing cover hitting the other..
