View Full Version : Double sided tape instead of clamps, is it safe?

Hi all,

I have a small piece of timber (150 x 255mm) that I would like to pin down to be able to safely use my hand router to make a groove. Clamps are in the way of the router so I thought I could build a router sled but I still need something to hold the piece down while it is routed.

Any insight about double tape? Is it safe to use in that case? Is there any specific brands for woodworking? One that would stick well on my workbench and that would easily be pealed off my piece of wood after I am done routing?

thanks in advance for your help.

SORRY - Found the answers I was looking for in other post. Still trying to find my way in through the encyclopedia of information!! I don't know (yet) how to delete the post.

I use double sided tape for template routing, you don’t need very much to secure it and getting it apart is the biggest hassle as the tape is so strong. I think you would be safe doing what you suggest. I just get the carpet tape from Bunnings and it’s fine.

Can you use wedges against your sled to hold the workpiece? I've used double sided tape to secure fences for a router to ride against but never to secure the workpiece itself - I don't think I'd trust tape alone. Never mind any saftey issues, even a small movement will ruin the groove.

Edit: I rescind my comments in light of those with more experience replying.

What he said, I haven't had issues with removing double sided tape.

I have had a lot of success using blue painters tape on each item and then glueing the tapes together with super glue. Pressfor about 60 sec wait for 5min.
Rout the piece and prise apart easily.
Use plenty of tape and make sure the glue stays on the tape. I have used this for profile routing, carving burl bowls and attaching temporally to a board clamped to my work bench which has a waxed finish.

Whenever they have it, buy up Aldi 2" double-sided tape. Sticks like :oo: to the proverbial blanket, and you really have to be careful not to use too much !

As mentioned above, I use blue painters tape and super glue. I use it on the timber I machine on my CNC. Unless the surfaces an almost dead flat, I have found double sided tape can be problematic as it’s very thin.

Thicker tape is available, but it usually costs more.

Totally agree. I've found Aldi tape to be best for my purposes and cheap. I usually buy a few rolls whenever I notice they have it. Very thin. I've never had a problem with the router and templates.

Only warning - don't leave until the next day to remove - this can be challenging :B

Reminded me of the masking tape and super glue trick description from years ago...
