View Full Version : Melbourne meet and greet Doug and Jules.

Sturdee
12th February 2006, 04:16 PM
Doug the slug and Jules are visiting Melbourne between the 23 and 28th of February. They have family commitments on both the Friday and Sunday and on the Saturday Jules is attending a course at Holmesglen Tafe until 5 – 5.30 but Doug is at a loose end that day.

They are both keen to meet in person as many of their "online" friends as they can and so I propose holding a BBQ on Saturday afternoon/evening the 25th of February to which you’re all invited.

It would be nice if various members could organize a tour of a few workshops for Doug during the day and finish up at my place and if someone coming past Holmesglen could pickup Jules as they are reliant on public transport or lifts.

You’re all welcome from say 4 – 4.30 onwards, I propose firing up the barbie around 6.30. BYO your own meats and drinks and pm me for the address.

G'day,

Sturdee, put me down on a list of a shed crawl as I know Doug and Jules want to have a meet and greet with Sarah. Maybe I could pick them up from a shed crawl close by and get them to the next shed crawl.

I live at Kilsyth.

Sturdee, PM me with your adress and I'll put my hand up for the BBQ on the 25th.

Hoprefully someone from the forum will want to see that too and mayvolunteer to take me there, anyway lets let sturdee coordinate all that, he has been kind enough to put his hand up for that and i thank him very muchfor doing so. must be a coupleof greenies in that

I don't want to steal Sturdees post.

It starts at 10.00 AM and goes to about 4.00 or so.

I was going to have a meet and greet and demo a bit later on for Forum members doing the same thing.

If you have bags of sawdust and woodshavings stored up and trying to work out how to dispose of them you can bring them along tomorrow to the bbq.

I'll gladly take them of your hands. I won't use them to make hamburgers:D but the chook pen can always have some more sawdust.

By early afternoon all was in readines. The work was done and I sat down to have a quiet drink and relax until the guests came.

Whilst having this drink the heavens opened up and the forecast thunderstorm started.

Although most of our bbq area is properly roofed, because of the need of maintenance and opening windows there is a sleeper walkway and small openings in front of the windows. Somehow with the amount of rain it found a way in from the walkway and it was dripping all over the seating area.

In despair we resolved not to cancel, but cook outside and somehow fit everyone inside for the gala event of meeting Doug and Jules.

Fortunately the rains stopped about 4.30 pm and after half an hour the area was cleaned up and dried out just in time for Jules and Steve (Auld Bassoon), who kindly picked her up from Moorabbin and who were quickly followed by Chris ( Waldo) arrival.

brought Doug, who had a day's private turning tution by as the people of his Club demo didn't turn up for they had put the wrong date in their diaries:p :p :p (Is that worth a greenie ?), followed with Al ( Ozwinner) and Libby ( Mrs. Ozwinner).

A lovely time was held, great to meet Doug and Jules and catch up with the rest, and later when the rain started again we adjourned inside for a while.

Al brought along some lovely Cedar, which Doug and I shared, and offered me some stuff that hopefully will fix the rain problem, which I'll pick up on Tuesday. Thanks again Al.

I'll post the photos later when my daughter has loaded them to my computer, must get something in return for that education I provided :D for she is a whizz in that.

Well now that i have levered Jools away from her cousin's computer, and i have a chance to post, let me say this has been a fabulous weekend!!!http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif

Gumby, thanks for inviting jools and me down for lunch on friday. It was a pleasure to meet you, Stuart Lees and DPB.

, Where do i start? You went out of your way to pick us up, take Jools to her comm games training and me to your workshop. I consider it a great privelige to have spent the day with you receiving one on one turning tuition from such an accomplished craftsman and a great teacher. if i was as gifted a student as you are a teacher, i may have learned more on the day. Thanks also for taking me to the bbq at sturdee's then back home. I also feel flattered that you thought enough of jols and me to detour via your home to introduce us to your lovely wife. , you are one of natures true gentlemen and i am still getting over how many things in our background and attitudes that we have in common. You would make a great drinking partner except you dont drinkhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon10.gif.

Sturdee, thanks to you and especially Elaine for organising last nights bbq. it was great to meet you in person as well as auld bassoon, ozwinner and mrs winner and waldo.

Groggy, thanks for a relaxing and educational morning. It was great to sit in your shed and experiment with your handplane collection and check out your other toys this morning. It wasnt such a full-on day as the previous two and that was just what i needed today.

I am still in awe as to how everyone has gone out of their way to help us and i thank everyone, greenies are on their way around as soon as they become available.http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon14.gif.

Dan

I thought you might have dropped in to arrest me on the weekend Dan. The additional water was caused this time and last year by a neighbour who after building a new house has not fixed up his backyard. We now get all his water and clay.

I shouted some threatening and rude words towards his house. Kind words didn't resolve the problem 12 months ago.

Thanks for the offer of looking after the planes but the snakes will need TLC also when I am in gaol for getting our neighbours attention.

The shavings clogged up the washing machine Al, when Meg was spin drying all the towels we used to mop up.:(

Chris, the thunder may have distorted my words.

Anyway, I am hijacking this thread and becoming hot under the collar again.

It looks like Sturdee had a bit of rain too, his shoes look like they are stuck to the wall at the high water mark.

It looks like Sturdee had a bit of rain too, his shoes look like they are stuck to the wall at the high water mark.

They are there to remind me of my humble dutch background and to remind me of the ever present threat of flooding.:D :D :D Don't forget Rob that the place where I was born and grew up was a whole NINE metres below sea level.

Maybe a mini dyke around your workshop is needed.:D

G'day Auld Bassoon,

If a LV Plane had fallen on 'em they be mad as cut snakes! :D

So would WB - as he doesn't have any - they're all Lie Nielsen's. I have to admit to thinking about swapping one or two, just to see if he'd notice :D :D

G'day,

Great to have met you Doug and Jules.

Back to much better weather I'm sure.

If ever you down again Doug, I might've been quiet, I just take a bit to warm up. The Melbourne weather must have something to do with that I think.

Glad you're both home safe 'n' sound.:)

See you soon Jules.

G'day Doug,

Sounds like a good idea. Felt guilty about leaving wife and bub at the time but I was told to go forth etc. with a curfew damnit.
