Picked this up off the side of the road, it is a coffee table. Can anyone ID the wood for me. My guess is camphor laurel . However it does not have the characteristic smell when you scrape it . It is hardwood. I am an absolute beginner at wood type ID so any help will be appreciated.

I have included photos of the underside which is un-finished. It looks like it has been finished with gloss polyurethane on top.

The top has a slightly more golden colour than the picture shows and the underside is slightly less red.

thanks ,

As an absolute Guru in the CL stakes, I would say it is definitely not Camphor Laurel. Grain is wrong and there's no red in CL. Bruise it and it smells like mothballs.

No idea what it is tho. Looks like the slab was cut from where the trunk bifurcates or at a junction of a few branches. Nice grain and figure.

Whatcha gonna make??

Agree it is not camphor, sapwood is not distinct and colour is wrong, camphor can have red/pink but not in the sort of patterns that you have in that piece. It could be flooded/shining/sydney blue gum not sure take your pick.

It is an almost impossible job to pick from a photo.

Thankyou gentlemen,

I agree PAH1 it is almost impossible to tell from a photo, however at least I have much more idea than I had before I asked.

thanks

I reckon it could be Myrtle , it goes yellow after a fair time.
