Looking for hinges...

Hi,

I was wondering what a decent pair of hinges for a small box should cost?

I went into our local joinery supply place and I was quoted $5 for two tiny hinges (of the drill in variety).

Now, this isn't that much, but when compared to buying a box (this is for pens by the way). I can buy a box - premade, hinges, nice wood and everything for $6. This seems a little strange to me.

I was expecting the hinges to cost more in the region of maybe $2. Now, I might be absolutely wrong, I might be thinking wishfully, or I might simply be looking in the wrong place.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Do you have any Spotlight Stores in Hobart?
They usually have a good range of miniature hinges ,clasps etc in their craft section.

I bought a fistful of tiny hinges and fastenings from McJings for some pocket change

$5 a pair would not be entirely unreasonable if they are good hinges - ie solid brass and not plated tin.

You can also look at Woodworks - http://www.thewoodworks.com.au/ who had miniature hinges & fitting of superior quality. Any place that sell dolls house stuff will have basic nail on hinges that can be quickly changed to screw on hinges with a punch or countersink - Home Yardage & Spotlight are 2 mainland chains that have them in their 'craft' section. If you want a fright, check out the cost of hinges for radio control model aircraft.

Lee Valley have some nice miniature brass hinges that fit a simple hole (press fit) & have a builtin stop.

Try mother of pearl in sydney. Good web site and the cheapest I can find. The other good source for quality is Anton Gerner, try his web site. Not the cheapest but fantastic quality

Anton Gerner is apparently no longer selling his glue or hinges. He sold this part of his business to another company, but I had no luck in ordering from them.

Yes AG's hinges were very good. I always suspected they were from the US. They looked identical to the Brusso solid brass hinges sold by Lee Valley. Still the finest high quality hinges I've found.
