Can anyone give some advice on the shape or sweep on different brands of carving chisels. In particular ,Pheil and dastra chisels.Do both brands use the same English standard of numbering.
Thanks to Neil for adding the spell check. I think that it is great and I hope members use it.
regards Terry

You can see the Pfeil gouge numbers and shapes in the Carbatec catalogue (and the Hersch list as well, a bit different again)). You can see the Dastra patterns (a bit different again of course) on the website http://shop.eunetics.de/shop1/images/jbo/11000/stichmuster1.php

Does anyone sell Dastra in Oz? I like the ones I have.

The Sheffield List numbers can be seen in any Chris Pye book, or any number of carving books for that matter. See http://www.chrispye-woodcarving.com/toolshop/ts_kts.html for some comparisons. Of course the makers do not necessarily follow the list shapes religiously.

Who knows what standards the Japanese use, this might help http://japanwoodworkeronline.com/041203_jww_site/0037.htm

I have been finding out a bit about all this stuff as I sort out my accumulation of carving gouges, adds up to 68 ... so far, I better carve something soon.

Cheers

I bought some dastra palm chisels from Neil Eckerly/ Eckersly ??( I think the surname is correct) a couple of years back , located in Adelaide .His business name was something like Ecky Agencies or Ecky Imports .

Dastra chisels are VG , come sharpened but unhoned .

ps. Try Ecky Agencies 08-84459230
