Not sure if it has been done before but I have been toying this idea for a while now. How would it look if I put both tails and pins on the same board?

I decided to use the opportunity to make my first box. To make it even more interesting I am using 4 different species (huon pine, kauri pine, tas blackwood and tas mytle). It is also a great way to get rid of the good off-cuts.

The base and cover will be next.

So do you think the tail & pin board is a goer?:)

For mine, I prefer to see it the conventional way. Good effort on the joints though.

Nuh!

....and there's a reason! The dovetails are always aligned so that the joint takes the load. Even people who have no idea of how they work or what they are, have been "programmed" to read the joint in a particular way.

You'll get away with dovetails on the "wrong" side of the joint, but not alternating.

Just a bit of Sunday night honesty!

Nice work though.

Heck - I've done this many times before - the result has always ended up in the bin. I never thought of telling people it was intentional.:D :D

I will burn it when I get home.

Turn them up side down and glue them back. Problem solved!:p

Very interesting approach Wongo! OK maybe not a favourite, but wow - great learning experience! Don't burn the box, there's still miles of useable timber there. I like the look of the different timbers together.

cheers

Gotta admit it doesn't look quite right but if I could cut dovetails that tidy, I'd be putting them everywhere too!

Mate it does not work for me, but if it were not for experimenters like you we would all be using 3" nails and butt joints.:D
Keep up the good work Scott.

Termite,

That's exactly what I've been experimenting with for a few years now, has it been done before??

P (bugger, just when I nearly had it right too!)

Cool. Why not? Something outside the box:) Sure it looks non-standard, but for a box (unlike a drawer), I can see no structural reason not to mix 'em up a bit.

For that matter, why not mix tails and pins at the same corner? I'm sure Wood Borer could nut out a way to get them together.

Make interesting conversation piece, as for the strength issue, in such a box, I don't think it matters . I too have done this very thing but again it was not by design and usually ended up as fancy kindling. (Which, by the way, we are going to be needing tonight.... first day of Spring here on the top half and forcast is for 6" snow by morning. ECCH!!! Just returned from a visit in Florida with Swimming & Sunning in 85 F temps. This Sucks, big time)

See no reason not to complete the boxes and use as examples of what each wood displays in that joint arrangement.

Thanks for the posting.

Thanks Zen and Hick,

Of course I am going to finish the box. (I have almost finished the base). I see nothing wrong with it, sure it is not a goer for most of us but hey it is fun to have a go and I like it.

I will post again when it is finished.

Huon pine + Danish oil + 1200 wet and dry =

Scott, that is very unusual. I'm not sure if I like the asymmetry, but a greenie (in the debt column, for the usual reason!) for the innovative try.

Good joinery anyway - so long as the jig was made up of a handsaw, some chisels, a bevel square and a marking gauge :)

Shssssh! Mate - don't let the cat out of the bag, Damhkit! :) :)

Started a pile of poo but the job must continue. :D

The box is made to keep the keys, wallets and watches. I usually left them on the table which drove the wife crazy.

Finished with 4 coats of Danish oil, EEE and traditional wax.

So, I'm the odd man out - I like it!

It ain't a drawer, so there's no need for dovetails for strength in the first place... they're really only ornamental and I think they serve the purpose admirably here. :) Especially in conjunction with the overhanging top and base.

Kudos (and a greenie) to you, for stepping "outside the box." :D

Scott, the end result is great! Something unusual, and that's good.

I like the model ship display case too - is that "Victory"?)

Scott, Scott, Scott, what have you done? Boxes must always be made with regular dovetails, no contrasting timber colours and of course, the timber must always be bought especially for the project. You mustn't use leftovers, you naughty boy.

I'l give you a greenie for trying, but don't do this again.:D

Wongo,

I like the thinking outside the square, I think the thought crossed my mind, but for more that four sides, and I gave it up as too hard. I would have thought putting the box together would have been hard, since you would be relying on slack in the joints to be able to get the sides together? Or do I need more imagination to visualise it going together.
Nice box all the same, and I always admire someone "subverting the current paradigm"

Hi Wongo,

I think, in the end, that the box looks great and I bet it's very handy too! Definitely a SWMBO-points winner and great talking point.

cheers
