I love 'em. They really let the wood speak quietly and confidently. The marquetry is very well done, in a classic decorative pattern. I like the thin splines (handsaw?) and faux dovetails.

3&4 came out quite different colours. Were they taken under different conditions?

Classy stuff, Alex. The trompe l'oeil effect of the marquetry in the first box is very impressive. I like the thin splines in the mitre joints, too.

Really clever stuff. Did that hex shaped box give you any trouble? uno, cumalitave angle errors and all that.

I reakon the box in picture 3 and 4 looks the best. Nice combination of warm colours.

If these are simple, show us some complex ones.

Thanks for the kind words.

Zenwood, the slots for the splines were cut with a tenon saw. Photos 3 & 4 were taken under different conditions - with & without flash.

Not really - I've made up a crosscut sled with extremely accurate 60 deg fences for cutting the box sides.

It was important to get the diamonds on the lid exactly the same size & correct angle, so I dressed each one by hand using a bevel gauge, vernier & block plane, after leaving them overnight to stabilise.

Nice one Alex! Love the 'Louis Cube ' Parquetry.... Something I will be doing on the next box I make.
Did you have any trouble with cutting symetrical 60degree cubes repeatedly, or is is just a matter of a simple yet precise jig?

Lovem

Especially the hexxy one, I am toying with havin' a go at one next time, probably will now I've seen it is possible.

I'll leave the marquetry alone though, way outa my league.

Magical boxes Alex, particularly the first one as the lid is really something:)
