Another clueless wonder

Hello Guys
I'm completely new to woodworking. Having bought in Melbourne's SE semi-rural suburbs, I am trying to get a few projects underway.

I logged on to this site a few months ago and wasn't able to log in with the login provided so gave up to now when I was finally able to reset my password - it's been fustrating not being able to post.

Anyhow, I'm not completely new now, since a few weekends ago just gone I've just built a woodbench to replace the kitchen cabinet based one in situ when I inherited a single garage.

It is built from 90mm x 45mm framing timber and clad with a F17 180mm x 45mm sided top with a 16mm MDF insert in the middle. To add to the ensemble is a 100mm record vice.

It's 6ft long, and 800mm wide. It stands 850mm tall, I'm a shortarse so I don't want it too tall.

Truth be told, its not bad. It's not quite level, but then nor is the garage slab floor :p

The hardest thing was pre-drilling the F17 with a 14.4 cordless GMC:confused: It went through (eventually), and I forgot to drill the bottom section and thus splintered the bottom slightly when I banged in the coach bolt. I was able to do a better job with bolt No 2, remembering to pre-drill the bottom as well, this time borrowing the 12v DeWalt from a neighbour - see - quality pays.

My neighbour then turned up on his quad with his corded drill and the last 2 coach bolts went in so easily I'm off to Bunnings when I next release funds to get a Makita ?620.

I embarassed myself by turning up at his workshop door with my cheapo bit trapped in the keyless chuck but apparently it does that and he was able to free it. Other tools purchased not hitherto owned was a set square:p, a set of sutton/viper bits (I broke a few from the ones that came with the GMC:rolleyes:) ditigal calipers, set of quick grips, G-clamps - I've only got 2 pairs of hands after all. I tried sash clamps but these were too heavy to manhandle with one hand.

I've gained so much confidence from this venture I've realised that I can easily extend my laundry out on to the deck with framing pine and cladding. Watch out for another post!

Welcome aboard "have" :), bench sounds good, gotta have one to fump stuff on.

Put up some pics, good practice for later ;) (resize them first to 800 x 600ish, and compress to < 100K)

Hang on allow me to advise, if I may. In military terms, a Chief of Staff, or Executive Officer as the seppos have it, is very much a SECOND in command. Does all the tedious stuff and the admin.

By calling her Chief of Staff, I allow her to think she's in charge when really I'm the Commanding Officer. And thus get to call the shots. :)

Now from the sounds of it youve built yourself a mans bench not one of these perfekshun things that some fellas an sheilas get into... but a MANS BENCH... good to see someone else keepin up the side ;) Your tool collection needs attending to and I do think your hard earned is more better spent on fixin that problem rather than sending her highness outta the country! :eek: mmmm on the other hand if youve got the cheque book or credit card let her enjoy herself and go KNUTS!!!

Course theres gonna be a hooha and a half when she returns to find a humungous great shed out the back chockablock full of tools of all discriptions but mate its easy enough to salve her ire... "But honey sweetums cutesypie didums I bought them for you! Im gonna build you a mansion and then build all the furniture in it just for my preciousweshiush diddlydoodles" and she will look at you through the corner of her eye and go "Oooh yeah? You?" and promptly start rolling around laughin her noggin off at which point you present her with a beautifully made of Queensland maple interspersed with beautiful Huon pine inserts and a tapestry of marquetry framed picture of her own self table and she will melt... easy as ;)

And were here to help aint we mates? No worries! :cool: now how long she gone for? then you better get burnin that damned peice of plastic hadnt you! Next thing you will need to do is ask us for a list of tools that you have to have... no worries we will help wont we mates? ;)

No need. Whilst I can't log on, I've been searching like an idiot. Can't belive how much I've learnt from you blokes. I'm been scouring all the other forums for regravelling driveways etc the list is endless. Looks like this is a onestop shop.

Listen, I've saved so much money on food with Chief being away, I've tooled up and still saved. I almost got a cheap Triton on Ebay but I didn't get my bid in quick enough.

And you're right, this bench is a bench, its not finished, its not coated in any oil. Its fit for role, it's in the garage.:D

Can't see the need for a router or something yet but I do need a decent drill. Problem is, I can see it now, the need actually passes for a piece of equipment and I actually wonder when I will actually need it next.

And what the hell is a 'biscuit'?!

The other worry now is that I want the single garage and stuff in it to be able to take the local CFA slip on ute in the event there's a fire down the back, can't have it taking off the vice as it trundles down.

I should know, we almost took off someone's carport roof with the tanker responding to a bush fire the other day.

You mean your not taking our advice? Wendys wrong :p ...the only router to get is the Triton (note sorry mates but its a bloody ripper! and its the only triton gear Ive got) Now... mate theres no such thing as a tool that isnt needed somewhere down the track :cool: and thats why Ive got two table saws two thicknessers and Im presently looking at buying another bandsaw and lathe (note I cant use the one Ive got but that aint gonna stop me gettin another one now is it? ;) )

A really good example right, going through my Dad's shed a few years ago I saw a bag of Spackfilla opened but barely used, I bought it back down to Antartica and it's been sitting in the shed until last weekend when I used it in my bathroom reno - 4 years later.

Never pass an opportunity to grab it 'cause you'll need it one day. Like they say, "Never get caught with your pants down" :D

Rodeo was on this weekend (Easter) while I was busy nursing a busted Landcruiser in Seymour, must admit I was scratching my head when I saw the suburb, I now know where you are, I frequently drive through Mt BUrnett on my way to numerous events on the other side of the hill.
