It has been a long time since I sent you some progresses done in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:p</st1:country-region>.
Here woodturning is not developed at all but as you will see, those who want to learn do rather great progresses. Here is an example of one of the turners who came to learn segmented turning: Giovanni Lauricella.

I like the effect of the one in the third photo, I assume it's a hollow form up top, but do you know if the base has also been hollowed? If so, was it hollowed up from the base or down through the waist of the piece?

No, only the upper part has been hollowed.
This student realized this piece (you might have recognised it, it was published on woodturning magazine) only after 7 days of training at La Truciolara.
He is not yet familiar with hollowing in complex shapes with a small entrance for the gouge

Only seven days? I can see that he'll do well then. :)

I am dreaming of receiving lessons from him on using all the woodworking tools. He does magnificent furniture and wanted to add turning to his skills :)
